Christopher Smith Associates hold ISO 14001 Environmental Accreditation and work to promote sustainable solutions on all of our projects. We have worked on a selection of varied projects utilizing the Building Research Establishment’s environmental assessment method (BREEAM) “Very Good” and “Excellent” ratings to address factors such as high energy usage, large quantities of waste, poor occupancy comfort and low user satisfaction. Our projects at ASDA Shaw and 97 Milton Park, Abingdon for MEPC were winners of National Silver Winner, Builders / Developers Non-Residential Green Apple Award 2008 and British Council Offices Awards 2008, Regional Winner of Commercial Workplace, South of England and South Wales.
We acknowledge that the results have provided a range of benefits to all involved including improved internal environment, staff satisfaction, increased profitability for business, reduced utility bills, improved corporate image and overall improved the environmental performance of the buildings.
In addition to assessing the initial capital spend it is our experience that the final decision to adopt any options will need to be aligned with personal preference or governance and any strategic operational programme related to planned duration of site occupancy. To assist in this process, Christopher Smith Associates will derive life cycle costs accounting for maintenance costs to determine payback periods rather than an assessment based on a cost comparison at capital expenditure stage alone.
In 2012 our commitment to sustainability and new technologies was recognized by ASDA Stores Ltd who appointed us as their sole cost consultant for all energy works for the next three years. Current projects include wind turbines, PV installations and voltage optimization.
